A phishing scam has targeted Mac users by redirecting them from legitimate websites to fake websites which tell them that their computer is infected with a virus. The user is then offered Mac Defender 'anti-virus' software to solve the issue.
This 'anti-virus' software is malware (i.e. malicious software). Its ultimate goal is to get the user's credit card information which may be used for fraudulent purposes.
The most common names for this malware are MacDefender, MacProtector and MacSecurity.
Apple released a free software update (Security Update 2011-003) that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants.
The Resolution section below also provides step-by-step instructions on how to avoid or manually remove this malware.

Compose tweets from the menu bar and handle Twitter DMs from the desktop, thus avoiding both the need for a browser and the distracting timeline
Twitter is all the rage nowadays, with everyone rushing to either follow their favorite personalities or share their own very important thoughts with hordes of followers. The more users you follow, however, the more time-consuming and distracting your timeline gets.
Twizzle is an open-source app that gets rid of the timeline altogether and allows you to share tweets and message other users directly from the menu bar. It can make Twitter feel like a completely different service, with the added benefit of freeing up another tab in your browser.

Compose tweets from the menu bar
If you usually just post tweets and aren't too interested in what others are doing, Twizzle will be perfect for you. Just click the app's menu bar icon and start typing out your tweet, complete with images, GIFs, emojis, and polls.
The pop-out window can be resized, up to a point, which is handy when adding large images or browsing GIFs. You can also compose multiple tweets and post them all at once, so go crazy.
DMs without other distractions
Twitter has become a popular messaging service in its own right, which isn't surprising given that it has such as large user base, many of whom aren't connected via other social media platforms. But the web interface is pretty crowded, and you need to keep yet another tab open just for chatting.
With Twizzle, you can just click the Dock icon or right-click the one in the menu bar to access a minimalistic interface for your DMs. It's mostly identical to the web UI, but it comes with additional buttons for switching between the dark/light themes and toggling the messages panel.
Now that we've mentioned the Dock icon, I have to say that an option to hide it would be nice. You can already disable the menu bar icon if you wish, but I'd prefer it to be the other way around.
Tweet, chat, and ignore the timeline
If you mostly use the service for tweeting and chatting, you'll be very happy with Twizzle, as it takes Twitter out of your browser and allows you to interact with your followers while avoiding the timeline. It's also free and open-source, so what's not to like?
